Students will be given a design
formula for choosing fabrics
that will be strip pieced and
then sewn into a small wall
hanging in the quilt-as-you-go
method. Special Emphasis will be
on color
selection. Be prepared to trade
some of your fabric with others
in the class to have more colors
to work with.
Carol will be
here for 2 days. Please see below for workshop #2.
CAROL TAYLOR:
GOING IN CIRCLES $40
Have you always admired those
pieced circles? You can do it
with ease and without even
pinning. Create a small (32 x
32) unique quilt of your very
own while learning to piece
circles & some unusual strip
sets, and do Carol’s trademark
circular quilting to complete
the look.
You’ll also learn how to
finish your quilts with facings
instead of bindings.
Carol will teach 12-15 quilting
design patterns for you to try
and go over many of the
techniques in the various books
teaching free motion quilting.
This is a hands-on class to
learn and practice these fast
new ways of quilting and
embellishing your quilts by
machine. Learn to do decorative
stitching with those metallic
and rayon threads! Machines need
only have a straight stitch to
do these designs. And even the
students who’ve had very little
quilting experience are
successful using these methods.

Pat Harrison
An Introduction to Indigo with
CAROL ANNE GROTRIAN
Please note this is a 2 day workshop
to be held on FRIDAY, October 21 &
Saturday, October 22, 2011. This
workshop will not be held at the
East Greenwich Methodist Church.
The location of this 2-day
workshop is:
59 Reuben Brown Lane
Exeter, RI 02822
Carol is an award winning fiber
artist from Cambridge, MA
No painting experience necessary
No sewing machine.
Build a waterside landscape that
incorporates depth and solidity
of composition. Strategic
placement of batiks and
multi-value fabrics will
simulate light and shadow.
Adding paint will enhance
dimension for this landscape to
“POP” off the surface. If you
have difficulty in establishing
a fore, middle and background,
this is the class for you.
Pat Harrison - Simply
Designing with Electric Quilt (EQ)
A full day workshop which
includes an introduction to
designing quilts on EQ. The day
begins with a demonstration of
how the workshop quilts were
designed on EQ7 using a block
from the program. The block
will be
sized, flipped, rotated,
recolored, etc… and finally
borders will be added turning it
into a virtual quilt.
Participants will have the
remainder of the day to create
their own version of the virtual
quilt in their choice of four
sizes from table topper to bed
size.
Pat and husband Tom divide their
time between Naples Florida and
Bass Harbor Maine.
Teaching machine quilting in
their shop in Naples resulted in
the invention of their Free
Motion Slider, a Teflon®
sheet that covers your machine
throat and prevents the dreaded
drag that slows machine quilters
down. Simply lay the supreme
slider on your machine bed and
the Teflon surface lets fabrics
slide easily in any direction.
In this workshop, you will use
Trapunto and free motion
quilting to create a small
project.
Joan Halley - Fabric Post Cards
and Note Cards - $35
plus $5 materials fee which
includes Fusible interfacing,
fusible web, batting, card
stock, parchment paper.
Fabric postcards are easy to
construct and can be used for
note cards, invitations, holiday
cards, gift tags, remembrances
and keepsakes. At last a
workshop where you will finish
at least one and maybe a dozen
projects. Making postcards
is a fun way to play with
fabric, threads, embellishments,
and fancy stitches.
You can be as precise or as
imprecise as your “personal
level of perfection” desires.
We will explore several
techniques and products for
making the postcards. Step
by step instructions will be
given for those who like to step
into the shallow end of the
pool. And a myriad of ideas
will be presented for those who
like to jump feet first into the
deep end. Each person will
make postcards to suit her
personality and style, and maybe
push the edges too. A fun
day of stitching.
Dianne S. Hire
$40 for 1 class; $80 for both
classes
Come Play with Me
Need to lighten up? Not
having any quilting fun? Then,
this workshop’s for you.
Intuitive and improvisational,
we’ll play liberating games at
your sewing machine. We’ll
lift four “games” from the above
quilt…slice fabrics, trade
slivers of blocks, and hunt for
bright colors just begging for a
place to land in a quilt. You
will return home with a few
oxymoron blocks, in random
order. Can’t you see it
now? Fabrics all over the
floor…mayhem, chaos, delightful
laughter.
Requirement:
Excellent Sense of Humor! . . .
and, oh yes, a good friendship
with a
sewing machine and basic
knowledge of piecing.
Book: Quilters PLAYTIME
recommended but not required for
class. It will be
available for purchase at the
workshop, should you wish to
buy.
SQUARE CURVES – EASY!
Design template-free,
intuitively created blocks of
inset curves that become
squares. Several options using
the same exciting technique will
be shown. By the end of
the day, you may have your
curvaceous squares designed,
stitched together, and ready to
complete. There are other
designs, too, using the exact
same curvy blocks. What
FUN!!!
The two images are of several
options that may be begun in the
Curvaceous Squares class.
“Curvaceous Squares” – the
smaller, center blocks have
green poppers located at the
bottom of the first column and
top of the next…then alternates.
“Centrifuge” – the poppers are
red (the windmills) with the
black and white centers in each
4-block combination.

other patterns using
jellyrolls.

Pat Bruno - Autumn Birches II - $60
for the 2 day class
Some basic free motion machine
quilting skill is helpful for
taking this class.
“Zentangle
® is an easy to learn method of
creating beautiful images from
repetitive patterns” (quote from
www.zentangle.com
website). Isn’t that what we do
when we are machine quilting
too?
Pat developed this class to make
machine quilting much easier and
help free up those with
“quilters block.”
The focus and relaxation created
by zentangle® really does cross
over into machine quilting when
using the same basic techniques
to create these quilting
designs.
The kit includes all materials
needed for one complete Zen
Quilt: practice materials, pima
cotton, pigma pens, final
binding, & Pat's special hanging
system. Please bring your sewing
machine and a few other supplies
as noted in this:
class supply list
Pat's award winning
"Zen Dahlia" quilt is based
on Zen Quilting.
Christine Fries-Ureel - The Art
of Making and Appealing Nature
Scene - $80 for the 2 day class
Learn how
to make beautiful trees,
including trunks and large and
small branches, using fabric and
quilting lines
to represent bark textures,
contours, and shadowing. Learn
the particular technique used to
make Miranda's hair
for "Miranda: The Tempest" by
creating a hedgehog using
free-motion embroidery on
water-soluble stabilizer.
You'll create a cozy place for
your hedgehog with rocks, long
reed leaves or grass, a corner
with pond water, dragonflies,
and a spider web. Students that
took the first one-day class
will have learned elements
they'll be able
to use in this two-day class to
add to their quilt. Everyone
will create her own personal
little nature scene! Imagination
is the key, and anyone can bring
out what they have inside during
a few-day workshop. We always
give each other ideas, and
you'll create beautiful new
scenes!
Mickey Lawlor - Playing with
Paints on Fabric - $40 + $12 Lab
fee
In a relaxed atmosphere of
warmth and good humor, students
will spend the day becoming
familiar with non-toxic
transparent permanent textile
paints, mixing, and applying the
paints to cotton fabric for use
in quilts. Students will paint
sun-prints, leaf prints, create
wonderful textures, garden
fabrics, etc. and generally
complete about 2 – 4 yards of
fabric. The designs produced
are a combination of planning
and serendipity and give the
students a hands-on basis for
future exploration in
hand-coloring fabric.
Suitable for all levels.
Lab fee $12. for use of paints
in class and some other
materials.
Pat Livingston - Needleturn
Hawaiian Applique - $35
In this workshop, the
concentration will be on
cutting, basting and and
appliquéing of a Hawaiian
Design. Because of the time
factor, it will not be possible
to complete the stitching so
that borders may be added and
the project quilted. However,
these steps will be discussed in
the workshop.
Workshops are held on various days of
the week. Cost of a workshop will vary depending on the cost of the
